About the 15″ Extended Mill Column
The standard mill column is 11″ long and has about 6″ of travel. This extended column is 15″ long, adding 4″ to the travel for a total of over 10″. If you need more height due to drilling or boring deep holes or working with tall setups, here is a way to do it without adding riser blocks. The column is available in two versions, standard and CNC. The CNC version is a few dollars more due to the extra drilled and tapped holes for the stepper motor mount. It also does not have the hole drilled at the top for the thrust collar, so it cannot be used on a manual mill.
You can order it as an option on a new mill, or as an updated replacement for your current Sherline mill. You will also need to purchase the appropriate leadscrew.
Manual 15 Inch Leasdcrew
The Sherline manual 15 inch leadscrew is perfect for the extended mill column. It provides the extra travel you will need for “tall” projects. The manual screw also comes in a metric option. If you prefer, there is a CNC version available (sold separately). The CNC version of this screw has extra holes for the stepper motor mount. If ordering the CNC screw, make sure that you also get the CNC 15 Inch extended mill column. There are two versions available. One is a standard CNC extended leadscrew. The other is the Nickel Teflon coated version. The leadscrew is also available in the metric measurement. The metric also comes in the standard CNC as well as the Nickel Teflon coated version.
