Description
Sherline 8mm Collet Adapter and Drawbar (.314 – .315) 1163
Collet Adapter and Drawbar 8mm for Non Sherline Collets
The collet adapter goes into the #1 Morse taper of the headstock. Use the WW collets with the adapter and draw up tight using the drawbar which passes through the hole in the spindle. The advantage of WW collets is that they have a hole through them for holding long stock. The WW collet drawbar is hollow and threaded inside to grip the external threads of the WW collets. As a result, material up to 3/16″ in diameter can pass through the WW collet and drawbar.
A knockout bar will help remove the adapter from the tapered spindle. Consequently, this same adapter and drawbar comes with the P/N 1160 5-piece collet set and the deluxe sets P/N 1162 (inch) and P/N1179 (metric).
Using WW Collets
Collets provide a quick, easy method of mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe with a great deal of centering accuracy. A drawbar which passes through the headstock and threads into the back side of the collet will draw the collet tightly into the appropriate adapter. (See Figure 1.) The adapter causes the jaws of the collet to close down, gripping the part to be machined.
Sherline collet adapter and drawbar (P/N 1161) holds collets with a shaft diameter of .312″ to .313″. Since many collets come with shafts of .315″ (8 mm) diameter, Sherline now has an adapter for that size as well (P/N 11560). Sherline uses the most common thread found on the various versions of WW collets, which is .275-40.
NOTE: Sherline WW collets have a body diameter of .312 to .313″. Collets made by other manufacturers may have a larger body diameter of .314 to .315″. We identify those as 8 mm collets and also make an adapter to hold them (P/N 1163). If you are using non-Sherline collets, measure the body diameter with a micrometer to determine which adapter to order.
