8 Direction Mill Column Upgrade for Mill
If you already own a 5000-series or 5400-series Sherline mill, or if you purchase one now with the thought of upgrading later, an upgrade package is available to convert your mill into an 8-direction mill when you feel its additional capabilities would be useful for your projects.
A modified base has been included to adapt the new column to properly fit your 5000- or 5400-series mill and all the necessary attachment screws. Also included is the column travel extension that allows the headstock to be brought down closer to the table.
Milling Column Upgrade
The 8-direction Vertical Milling Column Upgrade includes an adapter base that offsets the column back an additional 2″ to provide the same Y-axis capacity as the 8-direction mill.
The 8-direction mill costs more than the Model 5400 mill. If budget is a consideration, this saves money up front when you need it for accessories and allows you to convert later when your skill level can better take advantage of the additional movements of the 8-direction mill. If you have an older mill and would like to enjoy the increased capacity of the Model 2000 mill, this is an economical way of converting your machine compared to selling it and buying a new Model 2000 mill.
UPGRADE NOTE: If you are upgrading a current 5000/5400 series mill that has a brass tube leadscrew cover for the Y-axis this column upgrade CANNOT BE USED without the removal of the brass tube. Another upgrade option is to purchase the Rigid Column Upgrade. These columns have rectangular bases and were designed specifically to upgrade the 5000/5400 series mills.
About the 5000 and 5400 Series Mills
The 5000-series mills are Sherline’s most economical mills and would be a good starting point for any miniature machine shop. They feature:
- A solid 10″ (254mm) aluminum base
- Precision machined dovetailed slides with adjustable gibs
- Permanently lubricated spindle bearings
- Adjustable preload anti-backlash feed screws on the X- and Y-axes
- Two 1-5/8″ (41mm) laser engraved aluminum handwheels
- One 2-1/2″ (63mm) laser engraved handwheel with thrust bearings
- And many other features that can be found only on the best commercial machines.
The 5400 series deluxe mill is our most popular mill. It comes equipped with all of Sherline’s standard features upgraded to include a laser engraved 12″ (305mm) solid aluminum base for 2″ of additional Y-axis travel, laser engraved scales on the table and base, 2-1/2″ (63mm) adjustable “zero” handwheel on the Z-axis and 2″ (51mm) adjustable “zero” handwheels on the X- and Y-axes, a mill headstock spacer to provide more throat distance and a 1/4″ drill chuck and drawbolt.
All Sherline mills feature:

- A high-torque 90V DC motor with electronic speed control
- Speed is continuously variable from 70 to 2800 RPM without gear or belt changes
