Description
Sherline CNC-Ready 4400 Lathe Z Axis Upgrade Kit 6790
Lathe Z Axis Upgrade Kit for the 4400 Lathe
You can convert any existing Sherline lathe or mill to CNC-ready status. The installation will involve drilling and tapping several holes to attach the stepper motor mounts. In this kit are drill blocks that attach to the appropriate table or bed. They use the single existing hole. You can drill two new holes using the block as a guide. Consequently, you tap the holes and install the new mount. In the case of the mill column and the lathe leadscrew, you would have to install a new leadscrew. There are complete instructions for the conversion available, please email us.

What does “CNC-Ready” mean?
CNC-ready means the machine is ready to bolt on stepper motors and apply CNC control to them by means of a system that the user must supply. If you are not capable of developing your own CNC system, several aftermarket suppliers offer stepper motors, drivers and CNC software to complete the system. See our CNC Dealers page for links to aftermarket system suppliers.
Using the Template Blocks
This kit contains two template blocks that will help you locate the holes needed to fit stepper motor mounts to your existing Sherline lathe. (Sherline lathes now in production have the table holes predrilled to make this job easier.) The rectangular block is used to locate the holes in the lathe crosslide table (See Fig. 1 on the instruction sheet). The round template is used for the lathe bed (See Fig. 2 on the instruction sheet). Due to minor wear, these blocks are not hardened. They will only be used once or twice as a result, hardening is not imperative.
